STANLEY

A good portion of the Stanley information I have comes from sources through the Internet. Because of the volume of information I have acquired I have been unable to verify it all. I have included much of the data in my Thomas Stanley descendants outline because what I have confirmed has been fairly accurate, plus, a researcher needs to start some place.

My Stanley ancestry follows from Thomas Stanley of England, through his son John and John's second wife Martha Hutchins (married 11 Oct 1743, Hanover County, VA.) Some time in the late 1700's my Stanley line migrated from Virginia to Columbiana County, Ohio. The first proof of my connection to Columbiana County is with the marriage of James Stanley and Rhoda Cobbs in 1811 and the 1812 Ohio Taxpayers listing. The earliest generation that appears to be in the region is Thomas, son of John and Martha Hutchins, and Unity Crew Stanley. My first census record of the Stanley branch in Ohio is in 1820.

I was able to identify and place many of the families from the Columbiana County census reports - thanks to Paul, Wayne, and Donna Purdom of Bloomington, Indiana and the many other Stanley relatives who helped compile an impressive file of Stanley descendants. Another valuable source of information was Family Tree Maker's Ohio marriage index CD (1789-1850). It provided me with an excellent source of data to verify and contribute to the information I accumulated. Even with these outstanding resources nothing is better than actually being there; on two occasions, I had the opportunity to visit the cemetery in Damascus, Ohio that contained many of my Stanley relations. I tried my best to compile a listing of the Stanley’s buried at the cemetery - many of the older stones were worn and unreadable.

I was unable to locate any of my direct ancestry in the Damascus cemetery. The last sign of my direct Stanley line in Columbiana County, Ohio, is an 1820 death record of my fifth great-grandfather - James Stanley. It listed his heirs as Milton, Amy, Robert, and Judith. Robert and Judith were under 21 and were assigned William Fawcett as their guardian. Through LDS records, I learned that James Stanley's widow, Rhoda Cobbs Stanley, remarried to James Vaughn in 1822 and moved to Morrow County, OH, where she died in 1877.

I located Milton, James and Rhoda's eldest son and my fourth great-grandfather, in the 1840 and 1850 Marion County, Ohio census (a county right next to Morrow County where his mother, Rhoda Cobbs Stanley Vaughn lived.) Milton Stanley was married in Marion County, Ohio to Elizabeth Martin in 1836. Elizabeth was the daughter of John Still and Sarah Michener Martin—the Michener line is well researched in LDS records. Milton and Elizabeth lived in the county long enough to have six known children. Some time between 1850 and 1859 they moved off to Marshall County, Indiana where their oldest son Robert, my third great-father, began his family.

Robert C. Stanley was married 23 April 1858 to Ann Maria Cornelius in Marshall County, Indiana. Ann was the daughter of Hiram and Ann Ferguson Cornelius. I have Robert and Ann in the 1860 and 1870 Marshall County census reports. I also found Ann's mother, Ann B. Cornelius, in the county at the same time. I have never found any trace of the younger Ann's father in the 1850, 1860, or 1870 census reports, although, her mother continued to have children. Robert and Anna Cornelius Stanley and Robert's brothers, Samuel Oscar and James Martin Stanley, were later found in Ottawa County, Kansas.

LDS records report the death date of Milton Stanley as 1865, in Marshall County, IN. The last documentation of him I have is in the 1860 Marshall County, Indiana census. In 1870, Milton’s widow, Elizabeth Martin Stanley, was living with her son-in-law, Newton Aldaffer – but, it appears that her daughter, Mary Jane had died a short time before. I was surprised to find Elizabeth Martin Stanley in the cemetery of Culver, KS. She apparently came to Ottawa County, Kansas with son, Robert or James, and died in 1888 - but I did not see her in any census reports after 1870.

Robert C. Stanley died in Ottawa County, Kansas, on 20 June 1899; Ann Maria Cornelius Stanley died on 6 December 1893—mention of their deaths were brief in the Minneapolis Messenger:

The oldest son of Robert and Anna, William Milton Stanley, stayed in Culver, Kansas and married Nancy Margaret Pierce in 1882 Ottawa County. Nancy died in 1942 at their Culver residence. William died in a neighboring county hospital a couple years later - his obituary filled in some family background information.

William Milton Stanley's daughter Grace Alice Stanley married Elzy Ray Davis in 1904 Ottawa County, Kansas—they were my great-grandparents. Grace died shortly after childbirth in 1926 Hays, Kansas; her last child was Elzy Ray Davis, Jr. The Minneapolis, Kansas library had a nice collection of articles on file, and microfilms of the Minneapolis Messenger, that contained numerous Stanley obituaries.
